British History – Legacies of the Past

The first of my meetings will beTuesday October 27th at 10.30 but thereafter on the 3rd Tuesday of the month as before.
I propose looking more closely at some key events and developments in British history that clearly impacted on people's lives at the time and will attempt to review these from a contemporary perspective. This will of course mean dealing with historical facts but will also include some interesting stories and anecdotes on the way.

Some suggested topics are :

The Norman Conquest

The Black Death

The Dissolution of the Monasteries under Henry VIII

The English Civil War

The Slave Trade

The Loss of the American Colonies

Ireland past and present

Legacies of the Empire

World Wars 1 and 2

I will ask the group to indicate those topics of greatest interest (we are unlikely to cover all the topics listed ) and I am of course open to suggestions as to further topics they would like to include. Please note that the first session this term will be at the Beacon Centre on

Tuesday October 27th at 10.30 but thereafter on the 3rd Tuesday of the month as before.

Scott WhiteheadMembers of the group are encouraged to research an area within the overarching themes, either individually or with a friend and then share their findings with the group. This is not compulsory, but we are a friendly encouraging group and welcome new members.

The group is currently looking Law and Order and how it has developed through the ages.
